    Dixon Creek restoration

In the photo, Jefferson Elementary School fifth-graders, from left, Devin Corrigan, Aden Kailin and Toshio Hiratsuka dig holes to plant trees and plants along the banks of Dixon Creek on Saturday morning near the school.

The fifth-grade classes mapped out the area and decided which plants should go where earlier in the week. About 70 students, siblings, parents and community members showed up Saturday to plant about 700 native trees and shrubs.

The planting is part of the ongoing restoration of the area that started with removing all the blackberries and non-native plants last fall.
